EbA Mainstreaming

Mainstreaming Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) represents a fundamental shift in how we approach climate risk, moving nature-based solutions from experimental pilots to a core pillar of national strategy. By following the Mainstreaming Cycle (GIZ, 2023), planners can move beyond traditional "gray" infrastructure to embrace a more holistic model where healthy ecosystems, such as wetlands, forests, and reefs function as primary defenses. This systematic integration ensures that protecting our natural capital becomes the default setting for long-term societal resilience.

Implementing this cycle requires a "climate-first" mindset across every unit, from finance to urban planning. Through a continuous loop of vulnerability assessment, strategic planning, implementation and monitoring, the Mainstreaming Cycle allows governments to treat ecosystem health as a vital economic asset. This approach bridges the gap between conservation and development, resulting in a flexible, cross-sectoral framework that protects both people and the planet in an uncertain future.

Drawing on extensive global experience, GIZ has developed a conceptual framework designed to systematically integrate Ecosystem-based Adaptation into national and local planning.
